Driving Process Thinking

Driving Process Thinking starts with ensuring, during the problem solving process, that the assigned team looks at the data available, shares the lessons learned from past experience, and maps the individual process steps in the process.

Making these process maps transparent to all team members increases the productivity of our workforce by:

  1. Improving coordination between departments.
  2. Making it easier to identify opportunities for improvement
  3. Involving the frontline workforce in the process improvement effort

Defining and Adhering to Standard Work increases process speed by reducing the time spent trying to figure out what other team members are doing. Increased process speed drives reduction in the time it takes to deliver our product or service.

When defining Standard Work, a fine line exists when determining the appropriate level of detail. Too much detail and the workforce is constricted from making any decisions, which slows down the process. The right level of detail combined with a clearly communicated team mission and goals, allows the team members to make effective decisions without having to go to a greater authority.

Using Control Charts to understand and manage variability, allows our workforce to reduce the amount of variability in our operations. As with standard work, reducing variability increases process speed.

Control Charts should be used to look at departmental and operational level measures so as to resolve issues before they become major problems that require us to go into fire-fighting mode.
