Engaging Front Line Workforce

Workforce Engagement is defined as having a workforce, from the front lines on up, that is committed to do what is best for the organization at all times. From a Process Improvement perspective, the benefit of workforce engagement is that it expands the size of your process improvement team exponentially. This is a result of having the front line workforce owning and driving the process improvement effort.

The drivers for greater emphasis on Workforce Engagement are:

  1. Significant flattening of organizations in the last 30+ years has resulted in a workforce that is operating a lot more independently than before. The traditional management approach of work monitoring is not as doable as it used to be.
  2. People who have entered the workforce in recent years, have been raised in a culture where they EXPECT to be engaged.
  3. Recent research has identified that an engaged workforce culture will result in significant measurable improvements in safety figures, employee retention, absenteeism, customer satisfaction, and workforce productivity.

The tools for increasing workforce engagement are:

  1. Publicly praise people's efforts so as to re-inforce the behavior desired from them that will drive results.
  2. Utilize a direct respectful non-assuming approach for conflict resolution. This allows you to maintain a healthy business relationship as you deal with challenging performance issues.
  3. Coach your direct reports to understand your decision making process so that they can effectively operate independently of you.
